Austintown Township trustees in Ohio are actively advocating for the preservation of funding from local marijuana dispensaries as they face upcoming budget challenges. The trustees argue that the revenue generated from these dispensaries is vital for the township’s financial health.
Trustee Robert Santos emphasized their commitment to securing these funds, which were intended to support local services without burdening residents who are already dealing with rising living costs. “This is not the first time they’ve, in essence, pulled the rug out from underneath us,” Santos stated, reflecting on previous funding cuts that have impacted the township.
Recently, the trustees traveled to Columbus to lobby against House Bill 96, which proposes significant changes to the financial distribution from marijuana dispensaries. If passed, the bill would reduce the revenue share for communities from 36% to 20% and eliminate funding altogether after five years.
This funding is generated from a 10% tax on sales at dispensaries, with host communities receiving a substantial portion. Austintown, along with other localities such as Struthers, Niles, and Girard, could potentially lose between $200,000 to $700,000 annually if the bill is enacted.
Ohio legalized recreational marijuana in 2023, with the understanding that communities hosting dispensaries would benefit financially. Santos highlighted the importance of this funding, stating, “We can grab hold of this source without asking our residents for more money when they are already struggling with inflation.”
In the past, Santos expressed frustration over the state taking away promised funds meant for law enforcement, stating, “This is strike two. We may as well not support them in anything they want to do in the future.” The bill is currently under Senate consideration and will require the governor’s approval if passed.
The outcome of this legislation could have significant implications for Austintown and other Ohio communities relying on cannabis revenue to support essential services.
