New cultivation techniques are enabling cannabis growers to focus on specific terpene and cannabinoid profiles, which enhances the plant’s effects and benefits. On May 8, 2023, Trulieve and Modern Flower hosted an event titled ‘Elevate Your Knowledge AZ: Terpenes & Cannabinoids, A Full Spectrum Experience’ at Bud’s Glass Joint in Phoenix. The event featured Trulieve’s lead medical director, Dr. William Troutt, alongside extraction specialist Thomas Verderame and strain educator Joel Longie.

Dr. Troutt highlighted how advancements in cultivation practices allow growers to optimize the production of terpenes and cannabinoids. He explained, ‘With optimal cultivation practices, cultivators can maximize the terpenoid and cannabinoid yield from cannabis plants.’

Cannabinoids, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, influencing functions like pain management, stress relief, and sleep regulation. In contrast, terpenes, which number over 150 in cannabis, contribute to the plant’s aroma and flavor and can also provide therapeutic effects. For instance, limonene, known for its citrus scent, is linked to mood enhancement and reduced anxiety, while caryophyllene, which has a spicy aroma similar to that of black pepper, is recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Dr. Troutt emphasized the importance of new extraction methods, such as live extraction, which involves flash freezing freshly harvested cannabis. This technique preserves a higher concentration of terpenes, as they are volatile and can evaporate during processing. ‘By freezing the plant immediately after harvest, we can retain more terpenoids in the final product,’ he said.

The event also discussed unique cannabis strains with distinctive terpene profiles. One example is the ‘Jack Herer’ strain, which contains terpinolene, an uncommon terpene that contributes to its unique scent and effects. Dr. Troutt noted that terpinolene can act as a mild sedative while also being combined with limonene and pinene, which are known for their uplifting qualities. This combination may help users maintain clarity and focus.

Trulieve’s commitment to educating the public about cannabis cultivation and its effects continues through events like ‘Elevate Your Knowledge AZ.’ Dr. Troutt expressed enthusiasm for future gatherings, stating, ‘It’s great to bring people together to discuss the latest research and the different cannabis cultivars available.’

As cultivation techniques evolve, consumers can expect a wider array of cannabis products that cater to various needs and preferences, ultimately enhancing their overall experience.
