A recent meta-analysis indicates that cannabis use is linked to a twofold increase in the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), including a higher likelihood of death from cardiovascular causes. This comprehensive analysis, which reviewed 24 studies, was led by Wilhelm Storck, PhD, from the University of Toulouse, and published in the journal Heart on June 17.

The analysis compiled data from nearly 200 million individuals across various countries, focusing on the relationship between cannabis use and cardiovascular outcomes. The findings revealed that cannabis users face a 20% increased risk of stroke, a 29% higher risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), and more than double the risk of cardiovascular mortality compared to non-users.

The study highlights an urgent need for thorough investigations into cannabis use among patients with serious cardiovascular conditions. Despite previous research indicating potential cardiovascular risks associated with cannabis, there were gaps in understanding the extent of these risks, particularly as cannabis products have become more potent and diverse.

Only four of the studies included in the analysis assessed the dosage of cannabis used, raising concerns about the accuracy of exposure measurements. Most of the studies were cross-sectional, which limits the ability to establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship. However, the authors assert that the analysis provides valuable real-world data on the cardiovascular risks associated with cannabis use.

Editorialists Stanton Glantz, PhD, and Lynn Silver, MD, MPH, from the University of California San Francisco, emphasized the implications of this research, arguing that it challenges the assumption that cannabis is safe for cardiovascular health. They advocate for incorporating cannabis use into strategies for preventing cardiovascular disease and suggest that regulations governing cannabis markets should prioritize public health and safety, similar to existing tobacco regulations.

As cannabis legalization and medical use continue to grow, the findings of this study serve as a critical reminder of the potential health risks associated with its use. The researchers call for more robust studies to better understand the relationship between cannabis and cardiovascular health, particularly in light of increasing public acceptance and consumption of cannabis products.
