As opioid prescriptions face stricter regulations, researchers at Howard University are investigating the use of cannabis as a treatment for sickle cell disease (SCD). This chronic blood disorder affects millions and can cause severe pain episodes. The study, titled “Perceived Effects of Cannabis Use Amongst Adolescents and Young Adults with Sickle Cell Disease,” aims to explore why many young patients with SCD are turning to cannabis for relief and how it affects their pain, sleep, and emotional well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Patrise Holden and her team at the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health in Washington, D.C., partnered with the Rana Pediatric Fund to conduct this research. The investigation focuses on patients aged 14 to 30 and spans a five-year period, during which participants reported their cannabis use, frequency, and specific reasons for consumption, such as pain management and mood enhancement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Patricia Houston, a coordinator of the study, noted, “We started seeing more teens with sickle cell disease using cannabis. We began to question why. Were they finding that it brought relief for pain, sleep, or mood?” This inquiry reflects a shifting perspective, as both clinicians and patients show increased interest in exploring cannabis’ therapeutic potential, especially in underserved communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sickle cell disease causes the red blood cells to form a sickle shape, which can block blood flow and lead to painful vaso-occlusive crises. These episodes can result in fatigue, mobility challenges, and long-term organ damage. Traditional pain management has relied on opioids, but the Howard study seeks to identify alternatives that address patients’ underlying conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The research highlights the importance of dignity and autonomy for patients managing chronic illnesses. Joanne Adelberg, a genetic counselor involved in the study, stated, “We see patients from childhood through age 25. Part of our job is helping families create supportive roadmaps. More and more, that conversation has included cannabis.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unique in its focus on pediatric patients, this study is among the first of its kind to examine cannabis use specifically in young individuals suffering from sickle cell disease. Although researchers are optimistic about the findings, they emphasize the need for further investigation into the long-term effects of cannabis on this demographic. Adelberg remarked, “We have yet to investigate methods of use, smoking, edibles, teas, and concerns like impact during pregnancy, possible increased fatigue, and emotional regulation. But we can\u2019t ignore that many young people already use it to cope.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The conversation around cannabis is evolving, with advocates like Simona Wright-James highlighting its empowerment potential. Wright-James shared her experience of using cannabis to alleviate chronic PMS symptoms that prescription medications failed to address. She stated, “With cannabis, I didn\u2019t feel dulled or without my identity. My symptoms also dramatically improved.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite the growing acceptance of cannabis as a treatment option, cultural stigmas rooted in the history of the War on Drugs continue to hinder its broader acceptance. Wright-James pointed out, “For generations, marijuana was synonymous with criminality. The stigma remains, and we are still dealing with that residue.” She advocates for educational initiatives to change perceptions, emphasizing that cannabis should be recognized as a legitimate medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Sohail Rana, a pediatric hematologist at Howard University Hospital and the study’s visionary, noted the urgency for new treatment avenues, saying, “Most individuals with sickle cell disease are desperate for relief from their pain. They frequently turn to marijuana.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the Howard University research team prepares to publish initial survey results, they acknowledge the necessity for additional studies. Dr. Rana stated, “Not enough is known about the risks and benefits of marijuana in sickle cell disease.” Future surveys may compare different cannabis consumption methods and gather broader demographic information to better reflect community needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adelberg concluded, “Our families have been managing this pain for far too long; they deserve alternative treatment modalities that assist with pain and anxiety. With this survey, we are now starting to ask the right questions.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n
