Neue Studie zeigt, dass Cannabiskonsum die Spermienqualität nicht beeinträchtigt

A new study from Boston University School of Public Health analyzed the effects of cannabis use on sperm quality, challenging previous findings that suggested a negative impact. The research involved examining semen samples from 921 men, assessing factors such as semen volume, total sperm count, sperm concentration, and sperm motility.

The results indicated no significant differences in sperm quality between regular cannabis users and non-users. Approximately 22.6% of participants reported using cannabis regularly, with 3.3% stating they used it daily. Despite the variations observed, none reached a statistically significant level.

Researchers noted that while chronic cannabis use has been linked to lower testosterone levels and hormonal changes, the study did not find a consistent pattern affecting sperm health among the men tested. The findings highlight the inconsistency of previous studies that associated cannabis use with poor semen quality.

The researchers acknowledged that earlier studies had raised concerns about cannabis’s influence on reproductive health, but emphasized the need for further investigation. They pointed out that current data on cannabis’s effects on semen quality is limited and often contradictory.

Additionally, the study considered factors such as body mass index and tobacco use, which did not alter the results. THC, the main psychoactive component of cannabis, has been shown to affect various bodily functions, including those of the testes in animal studies. However, the lack of observable effects on sperm quality in this human sample raises questions about the extent of cannabis’s impact on male reproductive health.

The research findings were published in the journal Andrology, contributing valuable information to the ongoing discussion around cannabis use and its health implications. As cannabis becomes increasingly accepted and legalized across the United States, understanding its effects on health, including reproductive health, remains a priority for researchers.
