A new cannabis dispensary is set to open in Moorhead, Minnesota, this weekend, following the signing of a state-tribal compact by Governor Tim Walz on May 20. This agreement allows the White Earth Nation to regulate cannabis sales in partnership with the state, marking an important step in the state’s cannabis industry.
The dispensary, operated by Waabigwan Mashkiki, which translates to ‘medicine flower’ in Ojibwe, will be located in the remodeled building of the former JL Beers bar and grill at 2902 U.S. Highway 10. Zach Wilson, CEO of Waabigwan Mashkiki, announced that the dispensary aims to begin operations as early as this weekend.
“With the compact finalized, we can start transporting materials to the Moorhead location and prepare for sales,” said Wilson. The dispensary plans to offer a variety of cannabis products, including cannabis flower, pre-rolled cigarettes, CBD oils, tinctures, gummies, and vaping cartridges. All products sold will be cultivated in Minnesota, specifically on the reservation, with the exception of a beverage brand called Minobii, which means ‘drink and be merry’ in Ojibwe.
The signing of this compact is notable as it is the first of its kind under Minnesota’s 2023 cannabis legislation, which aims to establish a collaborative relationship between the state and tribal nations for cannabis regulation. The agreement focuses on ensuring public health and safety while promoting responsible cannabis sales.
In addition to the Moorhead location, the White Earth Nation also plans to open a dispensary in St. Cloud, expanding its reach within the state. Wilson expressed optimism about the Moorhead dispensary’s grand opening, stating, “We hope to launch on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.”
This development highlights the ongoing changes in Minnesota’s cannabis landscape and the efforts of tribal nations to participate fully in the emerging market.
