The cannabis industry in Nevada faces significant challenges due to heavy regulations and high compliance costs, contributing to the ongoing success of the illegal market. The tax structure in place makes it difficult for legal businesses to compete with illicit sellers, particularly when considering the price burdens placed on consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Currently, the industry grapples with a 15 percent wholesale tax at the cultivation level, a 10 percent excise tax on retail sales, and additional sales taxes. This combination quickly drives up costs for consumers, making legal products less competitive compared to those sold illegally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In response to these issues, a bill known as AB307 is being introduced in the Assembly. Sponsored by Las Vegas Republicans Danielle Gallant and Lisa Cole, the bill seeks to revise the existing tax structure to alleviate some of the bureaucratic burdens on the cannabis industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proposed legislation aims to eliminate the wholesale tax imposed on cultivators, which is considered one of the most complicated and least transparent costs in the supply chain. Currently, Nevada\u2019s system assesses a 15 percent tax based on a \u201cfair market value\u201d of the product, rather than the actual price dispensaries pay.
