Despite the cancellation, it is expected that many people will still flock to the park to commemorate 420, reflecting the grassroots origins of the holiday. In California, it has been legal for adults aged 21 and older to purchase and use marijuana since 2016, although there are specific regulations regarding public consumption. Historically, the 420 gathering at Hippie Hill was an informal event before cannabis was legalized in California.
