As the number of stores selling unregulated THC items increases, both Democratic and Republican lawmakers acknowledge the need for a solution to protect consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rep. Steve Reick (R-Woodstock) highlighted concerns raised by hemp farmers in his district, questioning why Illinois has yet to implement regulations similar to those for recreational marijuana, which include taxation and testing requirements. Reick emphasized the importance of regulating these products to eliminate their sale in unregulated venues like gas stations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Regulate them in a way that gets products sold in unregulated spots off the street,” Reick stated. He noted that many hemp businesses are willing to cooperate with regulators to demonstrate that their products are safe for consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Pritzker administration reiterated its commitment to advancing legislation aimed at safeguarding public health and closing loopholes that allow misleading marketing of intoxicating hemp products. Press Secretary Alex Gough pointed out the alarming number of hospitalizations among children linked to unregulated products and predatory sales tactics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It is essential for all elected officials to fulfill their duty to protect our children and support this bipartisan, commonsense action,” Gough said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
