The cannabis industry is expanding in Westchester and Rockland counties, New York. Since the legalization of cannabis sales and consumption for adults in 2021, New York has seen a rapid increase in the number of licensed dispensaries. As of now, 19 legal cannabis shops are operating in the Lower Hudson Valley following the opening of 202 Cannabis Co. in Haverstraw in early May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The state initiated the Conditional Adult Use Retail Dispensary (CAURD) program in 2022, granting the first licenses to 32 dispensaries. Priority was given to business owners affected by previous marijuana convictions and to non-profits aiding those impacted by incarceration. However, in August 2023, a state judge halted the granting of new licenses after a lawsuit from service-disabled veterans claimed that the state had unconstitutionally awarded licenses to certain businesses. This ruling paused the opening of new dispensaries until October 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
