Cal State East Bay has launched a cannabis certification program in collaboration with Green Flower, aiming to fill the numerous job openings in California’s marijuana industry. Gina O’Hara, a resident of Pacifica, recently completed the online certification course offered by Green Flower. O’Hara, who has spent 30 years as a consultant and technical writer in the pharmaceutical sector, was drawn to the medicinal properties of cannabis after its legalization in California.
The certification program spans six months and covers essential topics such as the biology of the cannabis plant, its effects on the human body, and various specialized fields within the industry. Students can focus on areas like agricultural practices, medical applications, product development, and regulatory compliance. Max Simon, CEO of Green Flower, emphasized that cannabis offers a promising career path for those seeking new opportunities.
As of last year, California’s cannabis market employed over 78,000 individuals. Despite some challenges within the industry, including a decrease in active licenses by 18% due to rising costs and regulatory hurdles, Simon noted that licensed cannabis production has increased by nearly 12%. He expressed confidence that reforms at the federal level could provide a more favorable environment for the industry.
O’Hara, who is currently working in biotech, is actively seeking contract positions within the cannabis sector. She has updated her professional profiles to reflect her new certification and is optimistic about the job market as more individuals from various industries, including law and finance, pursue cannabis-related education. Both O’Hara and Simon share a hopeful outlook on the full legalization of cannabis across the United States, anticipating that it will significantly benefit the industry.
