El Gobernador de Nebraska llena la Comisión de Licores de expertos en cannabis

A recent vacancy on the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission was initiated by Governor Jim Pillen, who sought to enhance the board’s expertise in cannabis regulation. Former Commissioner Harry Hoch Jr. confirmed that he was informed he would not be reappointed for another term, which expired on May 24. Hoch had initially requested reappointment but decided to withdraw after discussions with Dave Lopez, Pillen’s chief of staff.

In his resignation, Hoch stated that Lopez made it clear the governor wanted someone with more cannabis experience in the position. Hoch emphasized that his departure was amicable and there were no underlying issues with his time on the commission.

The Liquor Control Commission, which oversees alcohol regulation, also serves on the Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission due to a ballot measure passed by roughly 67% of voters in November. The legislature confirmed Pillen’s two new appointees to the medical cannabis board last week. Hoch noted that the inclusion of Liquor Control commissioners on the cannabis board was a practical arrangement.

Hoch’s resignation is separate from a recent issue involving the commission’s executive director, who was suspended following a federal search warrant executed on the agency. Hoch claimed he was unaware of this investigation and its implications.

As of now, there has been no public announcement regarding the process to fill Hoch’s vacant position or for the Medical Cannabis Commission, despite appointments being made earlier in April.

In an email exchange with Lopez, Hoch was informed that the governor’s office would publicly acknowledge his service and explore other opportunities for him within state-appointed positions. Lopez expressed the governor’s appreciation for Hoch’s experience and indicated a desire to involve him in a role with greater importance than the Liquor Control Commission.

Pillen confirmed he directed Hoch’s resignation, citing that serving at the governor’s pleasure means making new appointments upon term expirations. He expressed gratitude for Hoch’s contributions, stating it was simply time for a change.

While Pillen supports medical cannabis, he maintains a strong stance against the legalization of recreational cannabis, insisting on FDA approval for any medical cannabis access. He reiterated his commitment to fulfilling the will of the people responsibly and ensuring that the implementation of cannabis regulations is done correctly.

Pillen’s approach reflects a cautious but determined effort to navigate Nebraska’s evolving cannabis landscape while safeguarding public interests.
