Top Deck Cannabis Dispensary Aims for June Opening Amid Delays

Top Deck Cannabis Dispensary is set to open this summer, although its launch date remains uncertain amid various delays. The dispensary is located in the former Broken Chimney restaurant building on Tenney Street in Kewanee, Illinois. A prominent sign identifying the dispensary is already in place, and most of the necessary remodeling has been completed.

Chad Anderson, one of the investors in Top Deck, announced this week that the dispensary will likely not open until at least June. The delay stems partly from challenges in hiring contractors and sourcing materials needed for the renovation. However, the most significant hurdle now appears to be state regulations.

Illinois has stringent regulations governing cannabis dispensaries and cultivation operations. According to Anderson, the state will not grant permission for Top Deck to operate until a final inspection is conducted in June. Should state inspectors identify any issues, the dispensary’s owners would need to address them and request a follow-up inspection, which could prolong the opening timeline.

Anderson shared that the dispensary has already experienced delays due to state regulations. For instance, the approval process for a security camera installation took an entire month, demonstrating the meticulous nature of state oversight.

In addition to the dispensary, Top Deck’s owners are also planning to establish a cannabis cultivation facility at the northwest corner of Cole Street and Railroad Avenue within the Kentville Road Industrial Park. Anderson indicated that groundwork for this facility should commence soon, with hopes for it to open sometime next year.

As the opening of Top Deck approaches, the owners remain optimistic but cautious, navigating the complexities of state regulations while aiming to bring cannabis retail to the Kewanee community.
