South Dakota's Industrial Hemp Acreage Grows 28% in 2024

In 2024, South Dakota farmers harvested 3,700 acres of industrial hemp, marking a 28% increase from the previous year, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) National Hemp Report. This growth comes as the total area devoted to industrial hemp cultivation in the state rose to 3,900 acres, a 22% increase from 2023.

North Dakota also experienced growth in industrial hemp production. In 2024, farmers cultivated 850 acres, a 15% increase, with 760 acres harvested, reflecting a 4% rise from the prior year. Additionally, North Dakota reported 11,326 square feet of industrial hemp grown under protective conditions, which is about a 21% increase compared to the previous year.

On a national scale, the industrial hemp sector saw substantial growth in 2024. A total of 45,294 acres were planted across the United States, representing a 64% increase. The area harvested for all purposes reached 32,694 acres, up 55% from 2023. The total value of hemp production from open areas was estimated at $417 million, a 46% increase year-over-year. When including hemp grown under protection, the combined production value rose to $445 million, reflecting a 40% increase.

Floral hemp, which includes varieties cultivated for their flowers, has been a major contributor to this growth. Production of floral hemp reached 20.8 million pounds, a staggering 159% increase from the previous year. The area harvested for floral hemp expanded to 11,827 acres, up 60%. The average yield per acre also increased significantly, rising by 669 pounds to reach 1,757 pounds per acre.
