A student in Dryden, New York, nearly lost his life after using a cannabis vape that contained fentanyl. This incident occurred last week and has prompted the Dryden Central School District to issue a public warning.
On May 13, the school district revealed that a child collapsed in a school hallway after inhaling what he believed was a standard cannabis vape. Emergency responders administered multiple doses of Narcan, a medication that reverses the effects of opioid overdoses, to stabilize the student.
Testing confirmed the presence of fentanyl in the vape. The device was not purchased from a licensed cannabis dispensary but rather from an independent convenience store, which is not authorized to sell cannabis products in any form.
The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the sale of the laced vape, emphasizing the dangers associated with unregulated cannabis products. The district has implemented safety measures by equipping all buildings with Narcan and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) devices, ensuring that staff are trained to use them in emergency situations.
In light of this event, the Dryden Central School District is urging parents to engage their children in conversations about the risks of substance abuse. The district aims to raise awareness about the hazards of using unregulated cannabis products, especially those that may be laced with harmful substances like fentanyl.
