Haribo confirms cannabis in candy not from production

Haribo, the confectionery manufacturer, has clarified that traces of cannabis found in its candy products in the Netherlands did not originate from its production processes. In late May, the company initiated a recall of its Haribo Happy Cola F!ZZ lollies after three 1-kilogram packs were discovered to be contaminated with cannabis.

The Dutch food safety authority, NVWA, reported the contamination and issued warnings about potential health risks associated with consuming the affected products, including dizziness. Several individuals, including children, reported feeling unwell; notably, two children required hospitalization, with one briefly placed in a coma due to the situation.

Following the recall, Haribo conducted its own investigation and commissioned tests from an independent laboratory. Both inquiries concluded that the cannabis contamination did not occur during the manufacturing process. A spokesperson for Haribo stated, “We are pleased to confirm that the results of these tests are all negative and there are no signs of contamination. Our internal investigations also show that there were no irregularities in our production processes.”

Despite these findings, Haribo continues to collaborate with authorities to determine the source of the cannabis contamination. As of now, the precise cause remains unclear, prompting ongoing investigations to ensure consumer safety.
