Talaria, a Pennsylvania-based company founded in 2017, specializes in transporting cannabis products and cash. The company has made headlines for its unique approach to staffing, as it exclusively hires retired law enforcement and military professionals to handle these high-risk operations.
Ari Raptis, the founder and CEO of Talaria, emphasized the importance of hiring individuals with a background in law enforcement. He stated that these professionals possess the necessary training, discipline, and real-world experience to manage such delicate tasks. Raptis noted that retired officers are not only trustworthy but also bring a high level of integrity and accountability to the job.
Currently, Talaria employs 170 people across Pennsylvania. One of the employees, William Teper, shared insights about the work environment, highlighting that they prioritize punctuality, safe driving, and adherence to speed limits. Teper mentioned that the company’s first employee was a part-time officer who previously served as the chief of police in East Pennsboro Township. Another key team member is a former Major from the Pennsylvania State Police, who has over 30 years of experience in law enforcement.
Teper, who retired in 2018, expressed that the flexibility of the job is one of its biggest perks. He explained that many retired officers miss the camaraderie of their previous roles, and working in teams allows them to reconnect and share stories. Talaria operates in 30 states, including areas where recreational marijuana is legal. Raptis indicated that if Pennsylvania were to legalize recreational cannabis, the company would need to significantly expand its workforce, potentially hiring five times their current number of employees.
