The University of Mississippi has announced the creation of a new research center aimed at addressing scientific and regulatory challenges in cannabis research. The Resource Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research (R3CR) will be located within the National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR), which is recognized as one of the leading marijuana research programs in the United States.
The R3CR is backed by the National Institutes of Health and is a collaborative effort involving the University of Mississippi, Washington State University, and the United States Pharmacopeia. Ikhlas Khan, the director of NCNPR, emphasized that this center presents a unique opportunity to promote and facilitate further research in all areas of cannabis.
The new center will offer essential resources such as seed funding, webinars, conferences, and an interactive website. These tools are designed to assist researchers with regulatory compliance, research support, and the development of standards. The ultimate goal is to enhance cannabis research across the country, thereby leading to safer and more effective therapeutic applications of cannabis-derived compounds.
Key personnel contributing to the center’s mission include Donald Stanford from the University of Mississippi, who will oversee quality improvements in cannabis research; Mahmoud ElSohly, also from UM, who will provide regulatory guidance; and Robert Welch from UM, who will support the interpretation of cannabis research regulations. Additionally, Mary Paine from Washington State University will lead research support and outreach, while Nandakumara Sarma from the United States Pharmacopeia will manage best standards and practices in research.
