Nevada Cannabis Board Launches 'Buy Legal' Campaign

The Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board (CCB) has initiated a new campaign called ‘Buy Legal’ to encourage cannabis consumers to purchase from licensed businesses and to only use products that have passed safety inspections. This campaign aims to combat the state’s illegal cannabis market, which is valued at approximately $242 million.

James Humm, the executive director of the CCB, emphasized the importance of supporting licensed dispensaries, stating that these businesses adhere to a rigorous ‘seed to sale’ process. This process includes testing for harmful contaminants at various stages of growth and production. These contaminants can include yeast, mold, bacteria, and heavy metals, such as arsenic, which can pose significant health risks to consumers.

Humm pointed out the dangers of illicit cannabis, noting that consumers often purchase these products from illegal sources advertised on social media. Such transactions can be misleading, with promises of delivery to popular locations like the Las Vegas Strip, which is prohibited under state law.

To assist consumers, the CCB has made available a list of licensed dispensaries on its website, including those that offer legal delivery options. Humm encouraged the public to visit these licensed establishments, as doing so not only supports small businesses but also contributes to state education funding.

Additionally, the CCB plans to educate tourists about legal cannabis sales, particularly emphasizing that no sales can occur within 1,500 feet of gaming properties. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) is also taking steps to address the illegal marijuana trade, urging parents to talk with their teenagers about the risks associated with purchasing cannabis from unauthorized sources.

The ‘Buy Legal’ campaign serves as a proactive measure to protect public health and reinforce the legitimacy of Nevada’s regulated cannabis industry.
