New Mexico’s cannabis industry continues to thrive, particularly in border towns like Sunland Park and Las Cruces. According to data from the New Mexico Regulations and Licensing Department’s Cannabis Reporting Online Portal, the state has generated over $1.6 billion since the legalization of recreational cannabis in April 2022.
In the first quarter of 2025, New Mexico recorded approximately $140 million in combined medical and recreational cannabis sales. Although Albuquerque leads the state in overall sales, Sunland Park and Las Cruces have shown impressive performance, especially in the border region near Texas.
Andrea Brown, a spokesperson for the New Mexico Regulations and Licensing Department, noted in an email that cannabis businesses in these border communities have reported steady sales over the past three months. “Sunland Park continues to top the list of border cities in terms of sales,” Brown stated.
Since the legalization of recreational cannabis, Sunland Park has consistently held the number two sales position in the state, with Las Cruces in third. Brown expressed optimism about the growth of these businesses, stating, “The self-reported sales data from our licensees indicates that adult-use sales have steadily exceeded $30 million monthly.”
The sales breakdown for the top three cities in New Mexico for 2025 is as follows:
**January** 1. Albuquerque: $4.5 million in medical sales, $9.3 million in recreational sales. 2. Sunland Park: $186,273 in medical sales, $4.8 million in recreational sales. 3. Las Cruces: $835,771 in medical sales, $1.9 million in recreational sales.
