D.C. cannabis sales reach record $9 million in April

In April, Washington D.C.’s medical cannabis market achieved a new high, with total sales increasing by over 50% from March to nearly $9 million. This surge was primarily driven by a substantial rise in registered patients, which grew by approximately 66% in just one month, jumping from 20,127 to 33,384.

The metrics report released by the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration indicates that both local residents and non-residents contributed to this growth. D.C. residents served rose by more than 45%, from 11,396 to 16,559. Meanwhile, non-D.C. medical patients increased by over 61%, going from 1,920 to 3,102, and temporary patient registrations saw a remarkable rise of nearly 98%, increasing from 7,012 to 13,904.

The market expansion coincided with the closure of many unlicensed shops and the establishment of 13 new legal dispensaries in April, bringing the total number of dispensaries in the district to 36. However, this influx of new shops affected individual dispensary revenues. On average, monthly revenue per dispensary decreased by almost $9,000 compared to March, despite the overall market growth.

In addition to retail sales, manufacturing sales also saw significant gains. Manufacturing sales nearly doubled, achieving an increase of 102% and totaling close to $3 million, largely attributed to new concentrate and edible products introduced to the market. Conversely, sales from cultivation centers dropped by nearly 30%, but dispensaries reported an increase in flower sales, which rose by almost $1 million.

Sales figures for various product categories also demonstrated positive trends. Vapes, edibles, and concentrates all experienced substantial sales increases, with April 2025’s figures showing nearly $4 million more in sales compared to the same month in 2024.

The trend of new dispensary openings is expected to continue into May, with at least nine additional shops set to open. This ongoing expansion reflects the growing demand and changing landscape of the D.C. cannabis market.
