Metrc, a provider of regulatory technology for the cannabis industry, has introduced a new barcode system called Retail ID. This initiative aims to improve product traceability and consumer confidence in cannabis products. Retail ID functions similarly to a Universal Product Code (UPC), allowing consumers to scan a QR code on cannabis items for detailed information such as lab testing results and Certificates of Analysis.
Michael Johnson, CEO of Metrc, described Retail ID as a significant step for the cannabis space, particularly in Nevada, where it has been implemented. David Eagleson, vice president of product at Metrc, explained that this QR code serves multiple purposes: it provides vital product information to consumers and acts as an inventory identification code for businesses throughout the supply chain. The Retail ID system condenses the typical barcode and informational labels into one scanable function, which is particularly beneficial in an industry where packaging space is often limited.
Retailers have reported efficiency gains from using Retail ID, as they no longer need to manage multiple labels on products. This simplification not only saves space but also enhances the ease of use during the checkout process with standard 2D barcode scanners. As a result, some retailers are requesting that all their inventory includes the Retail ID system.
The introduction of Retail ID also promises to improve regulatory oversight. Johnson noted that the QR code can facilitate the communication of product recalls, thereby increasing product visibility and safety for consumers. Metrc currently tracks between 4 million and 5 million items weekly within the Retail ID system, with plans for expansion as the technology evolves.
The implementation of Retail ID aligns with Metrc’s long-standing mission to provide effective track-and-trace solutions throughout the cannabis supply chain. By enhancing transparency and accessibility, Retail ID aims to support both the cannabis industry and regulatory bodies, ensuring a safer market for consumers. As Johnson pointed out, ‘This is a special time to be able to get something out there — support the industry, support the consumer and support the regulation dynamics.’ With Nevada as a strong market for this initiative, Metrc is optimistic about the future growth of Retail ID and its impact on the cannabis sector.
