Kentucky has taken a significant step in its medical cannabis landscape by awarding business licenses for dispensaries in December 2022. Fayette County received two licenses through a lottery, with KYLX Acquisition Company LLC among the recipients. This company plans to establish its dispensary at the former Frisch’s Big Boy site located at the intersection of Sir Barton Way and Man O’ War in Lexington.
Casey Flippo, CEO of Dark Horse Cannabis, is spearheading the operation of the new dispensary, which will be named “Speakeasy.” The site is currently undergoing renovations, with demolition nearly complete at 1849 Alysheba Way. Flippo aims to open the dispensary in early November 2023.
Flippo expressed enthusiasm about converting the fast-food location into a professional cannabis retail space, stating, “Taking a fast food burger joint and converting it into what I believe will be one of the nicest dispensaries in the state is quite a lift.” The dispensary is set to offer a diverse range of products that comply with Kentucky’s medical marijuana regulations.
The vision for Speakeasy includes creating an immersive shopping environment that contrasts traditional cannabis retail settings. Flippo noted, “It’s not gonna be graffiti on the walls and products sprawled out all over the place. It’s an extremely systematic approach.” This commitment to professionalism reflects a broader goal to redefine how medical cannabis is presented and accessed in the state.
Flippo, along with his business partner Sean Clarkson, brings a wealth of experience from various markets. They aim to utilize their background in management to effectively establish and grow the medical cannabis marketplace in Kentucky. Flippo remarked, “Through our management capacities in multiple markets, we have exposure to what it takes to bring a medical cannabis business to fruition.”
The establishment of Speakeasy marks an important development in Kentucky’s approach to medical cannabis, particularly as the state begins to implement its medical marijuana program. Flippo emphasized the positive impact this dispensary will have on patients within the Commonwealth, stating, “I really think the patient population within the Commonwealth will benefit greatly by the way this has been set up.” With the anticipated opening in early November, Speakeasy is poised to serve as a cornerstone in the emerging medical cannabis industry in Kentucky.
