Manitoba allows homegrown cannabis starting May 1

Manitoba will permit residents to cultivate cannabis plants at home starting May 1, 2024. This new legislation, which eliminates the previous ban on homegrown recreational cannabis, allows individuals aged 19 and older to grow up to four cannabis plants per residence.

The federal Cannabis Act allows for personal cultivation of cannabis but permits provinces to impose their own regulations. Manitoba’s previous Progressive Conservative government had instituted a ban on home cultivation in 2018, a decision that was upheld by a court ruling in 2023.

With this change, Manitoba becomes one of the provinces in Canada to allow home cultivation, leaving Quebec as the only province still prohibiting residents from growing cannabis plants at home.

The amendment to the law was passed in June 2023, signaling a shift in Manitoba’s approach to cannabis cultivation and personal use. This move reflects a growing trend across Canada towards more permissive cannabis laws, as provinces reconsider earlier restrictions post-legalization.
