The Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society (MCCS) has released its inaugural guidance tailored for pharmacists involved in dispensing cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) in the United Kingdom. This guidance aims to ensure that pharmacists can dispense these medications safely and in compliance with legal regulations.
Pharmacists are integral to the process of dispensing CBMPs, which are increasingly prescribed within the private healthcare sector. The newly published guidelines offer pharmacists essential information about legal frameworks, prescription requirements, record-keeping protocols, and the processes surrounding controlled drugs. Moreover, the document clarifies the roles of pharmacists and highlights critical safety considerations.
Zul Mamon, an experienced pharmacist and member of the MCCS Executive Committee, emphasized the importance of pharmacists in the medical cannabis landscape. “With the rise of CBMP prescriptions, it is crucial for pharmacists to understand their legal obligations, the types of products available, and how to prioritize patient safety. This guidance provides practical support to help pharmacists deliver quality care effectively.”
In the UK, patients who require medical cannabis can select any licensed pharmacy to have their prescriptions filled. This guidance is designed to bolster safe and legal practice, equipping pharmacists with the knowledge and confidence to operate in this regulated and evolving sector.
Professor Mike Barnes, Chair of the MCCS, noted the critical role pharmacists play in ensuring patient safety and education as medical cannabis use grows in the UK. He remarked, “It is essential that healthcare professionals, particularly those dispensing cannabis medicines, have access to thorough, evidence-based guidelines. This publication marks an important step in our efforts to cultivate a well-informed workforce.”
Pharmacists seeking to expand their practice in this area can access the guidance through MCCS membership. The organization also offers expert-led training and mentorship, creating a network for medical cannabis professionals in the UK.
