Ohio's first legal 4/20 generates $3 million boost in sales

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Ohio celebrated its inaugural 4/20 with legal recreational marijuana sales on April 20, 2025, marking a notable increase in cannabis sales as residents took the opportunity to partake in the unofficial marijuana holiday. This year’s event saw sales rise by over $3 million compared to the average, highlighting a robust demand among Ohioans.

The legalization of recreational marijuana in Ohio came after voters approved it in the November 2023 election, with dual-use dispensaries opening on August 6, 2024. The sales data for the week leading up to 4/20 illustrated a clear trend: Ohio dispensaries recorded an increase in transactions and revenue compared to previous weeks.

In the six weeks preceding 4/20, Ohio averaged 262,333 transactions weekly, generating approximately $19.77 million in sales. However, during the week of April 20, sales surged to over 30,000 more transactions than the average, totaling around $22.77 million. This significant jump reflects the growing acceptance and enthusiasm for recreational cannabis use in the state.

Looking back at the previous year’s 4/20, Ohio’s cannabis market saw nearly $11 million in sales, which was about half of this year’s profits. In 2024, there were around 109,000 transactions during the same period, substantially lower than the current year’s numbers.

Buckeye Relief, a prominent Ohio cannabis cultivator, reported increased foot traffic at their dispensaries during the holiday weekend, although specific sales figures were not disclosed. Curaleaf, a national dispensary chain with locations in Newark and Cuyahoga Falls, shared its top-selling products for 4/20, which included both indica and sativa flower strains.

Curaleaf noted that in Ohio, customers tended to purchase larger quantities of cannabis compared to national trends. For instance, while the top-selling products nationwide were typically 3.5 grams, four of the top five products sold in Ohio were 14.15 grams, with the fifth being 5.66 grams.

As of April 19, Ohio’s cannabis market reached a new milestone, with over 25 million receipts from cannabis purchases recorded, of which more than six million were from recreational sales within the last nine months. This data reflects not only the growth of the market but also the enthusiasm of Ohioans embracing legal recreational cannabis.

As 4/20 continues to grow in significance within Ohio’s cannabis culture, the state sets a precedent for future sales and developments in the industry, further solidifying its place in the national cannabis landscape.
