A man from York County, Pennsylvania, is facing serious legal trouble after a police chase on March 26. Robert McCachren, 31, from Lewisberry, has been charged with child endangerment, marijuana possession, and 14 additional charges following the incident involving his two 14-year-old nephews.
During a stationary patrol at around 6:20 p.m., Newberry Township Police noticed a tan Honda Odyssey with an expired registration sticker from December 2023. As officers observed the vehicle, McCachren swerved and nearly hit the curb, prompting police to pursue him after he accelerated and drove erratically, crossing double yellow lines at high speeds.
Despite police activating emergency lights, McCachren failed to stop. He made unsafe maneuvers, including passing another vehicle on the left side of the roadway, nearly causing a head-on collision. The pursuit continued onto I-83, where he disregarded traffic signals, resulting in a multi-vehicle crash after passing a car on the shoulder. The chase eventually led to a Walmart parking lot, where McCachren’s vehicle began to smoke and showed signs of mechanical failure.
Upon detaining McCachren and his nephews, police discovered he had a suspended DUI license. He admitted to being under the influence of marijuana and possessing marijuana in the vehicle. Signs of marijuana impairment were evident, including paranoia, as he expressed fear over his suspended license.
The vehicle, which was cluttered with tools, emitted a strong smell of burnt marijuana. McCachren claimed the car belonged to his friend, Steven, who had allowed him to perform mechanical work. However, police later confirmed that Steven had not permitted McCachren to drive the vehicle. At the police station, he declined a Drug Recognition Expert evaluation, stating it wouldn’t matter due to the marijuana in his system. A search of the vehicle, conducted with Steven’s consent, revealed a medical marijuana card for McCachren.
