The White Earth Band of Chippewa has received approval to become the first tribal nation in Minnesota to open recreational cannabis dispensaries outside its reservation. On Tuesday, Governor Tim Walz signed a tribal compact that permits the tribe to establish up to eight retail cannabis locations throughout the state.
The first of these dispensaries, Waabigwan Mashkiki, is set to launch this weekend in Moorhead, located in the former JL Beers restaurant building. Additional locations are planned for St. Cloud, with preparations already underway for their openings.
Eric Taubel, the interim director of Minnesota’s Office of Cannabis Management, praised the compact with the White Earth Band, describing it as a forward-thinking approach to cannabis regulation. This agreement will allow the tribe to operate retail establishments that sell adult-use cannabis, marking a significant development in the state’s cannabis landscape.
The White Earth Band’s entry into the cannabis market is not just a local affair; it may set a precedent for other tribal nations seeking similar opportunities. By operating dispensaries off-reservation, the tribe aims to generate revenue and create jobs within their communities.
As the cannabis industry expands in Minnesota, the White Earth Band of Chippewa’s initiative could influence future regulations and tribal-state relationships regarding cannabis commerce.
