New Buffalo Township mandates cannabis advertising changes

New Buffalo Township, MI, is implementing new advertising regulations for cannabis dispensaries following a recent special meeting held by township leaders. Effective immediately, all dispensaries must turn off illuminated signs during business hours, a move aimed at reducing visual distractions for drivers and pedestrians. Michelle Heit, the township supervisor, stated that the decision was made to limit the number of feather signs to just one per property, further regulating how cannabis companies can promote their businesses.

The township currently hosts twenty dispensaries, with many located along major roads such as M-239 and US-12, which has created concerns about visual clutter. Kevin Brojek, the general manager of King of Budz, attended the meeting and expressed support for the regulations, noting that clear rules create a level playing field for all businesses. Brojek mentioned that his establishment does not rely heavily on signage outside, so the changes would not significantly impact operations.

Visitors to New Buffalo, especially during the holiday weekend, have commented on the eye-catching nature of cannabis advertising. One visitor, Robyn Parker, remarked on how the bright colors of the signs can be distracting while driving. The township’s decision reflects feedback from the community regarding the visibility of cannabis businesses.

Additionally, the meeting included discussions on increasing fines for any code violations by cannabis companies, reinforcing the township’s commitment to maintaining order in the growing cannabis market. The changes come as New Buffalo Township has decided against permitting any new cannabis businesses to set up shop, indicating a focus on regulating existing operations rather than expanding the industry within its borders.
