Hong Kong Customs Seizes Cannabis, Cocaine at Airport

Hong Kong Customs recently uncovered two significant drug trafficking cases at Hong Kong International Airport, resulting in the seizure of approximately 5.4 kilograms of suspected cannabis and 12 kilograms of suspected cocaine. The total estimated value of the drugs seized is about $11 million.

In the first incident, a 26-year-old female passenger arriving from Bangkok, Thailand, was found with 10 bags of suspected cannabis buds weighing around 5.4 kilograms, valued at approximately $1.2 million. Authorities arrested the woman and charged her with trafficking a dangerous drug. The case is set for a hearing at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court on May 26.

The second case involved an 18-year-old male passenger arriving from Johannesburg, South Africa. He was found with about 12 kilograms of suspected cocaine, concealed in 12 packets within his carry-on luggage. The estimated market value of this cocaine is around $9.5 million. He was also arrested, and investigations are ongoing.

Hong Kong Customs emphasizes the importance of risk assessment in their operations, focusing on passengers from high-risk regions to combat international drug trafficking. Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in dangerous drugs is a serious crime, with penalties including fines up to $5 million and possible life imprisonment.

Customs encourages the public to report any suspected drug trafficking activities through their 24-hour hotline or dedicated online reporting channels.
