Albert Lea City Council Votes on Cannabis Regulation Changes

Albert Lea City Council Votes on Cannabis Regulation Changes

The Albert Lea City Council is set to cast its final vote on new cannabis regulations during its meeting on Tuesday evening. This move comes as the Minnesota Office of Cannabis Management prepares to issue licenses for cannabis retailers across the state.

The proposed regulatory changes aim to establish a clear process for managing cannabis business applications. Key aspects include the ability to deny or revoke registrations and the option to request additional information from applicants. The city plans to implement a first-come, first-served registration system based on the timestamp of the submitted applications.

To qualify, applicants must demonstrate good standing by not having overdue property taxes or municipal utilities within the last 24 months. Previously, the council established a cap of two cannabis retailers to operate within city limits.

The vote will take place at 7 p.m. during the council meeting. Residents are encouraged to review the proposed changes and participate in the discussion as the city prepares for the upcoming licensing phase.
