On June 5, 2025, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted a significant shipment of cannabis at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. This operation was the result of weeks of surveillance based on credible intelligence. The consignment, which weighed 62.20 kilograms, consisted of 66 parcels of ‘loud,’ a potent cannabis strain, concealed within green tea packaging.
The shipment originated from Thailand, traveling through the United Arab Emirates before arriving in Nigeria aboard an Emirates Airlines flight. The NDLEA had been monitoring the package since it was watch-listed prior to its arrival at the airport’s cargo area on May 11.
In a separate operation on June 2, NDLEA agents seized 1,665 kilograms of skunk, another cannabis strain, along the Lekki-Ajah expressway in Lagos. Two individuals, Gidado Abdulrasaq Ayinde and Obanla Oluwafemi, were arrested in connection with this seizure.
Additionally, on June 3, two women, Favour Joy and Joy Igwe, were apprehended in the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City, Edo State, where they had 108.67 kilograms of illicit drugs in their possession. This included 106.57 kilograms of skunk, 1 kilogram of loud, 800 grams of colorado, and 302 grams of methamphetamine. Officers also discovered 9 kilograms of loud hidden in the spare tire compartment of a vehicle on Auchi Road, leading to the arrest of the driver, Atari Israel.
In Kaduna State, law enforcement captured 29-year-old Goodluck Nnaemeka along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway with 612 bottles of codeine syrup and 2,970 flunitrazepam pills. The same day, a 52-year-old drug dealer known as Kabiru Musa, or ‘KB,’ was arrested in Kurmin Mashi after the agency had already seized 25.7 kilograms of skunk from his location.
The NDLEA continues to intensify its efforts against drug trafficking in Nigeria, reflecting its commitment to combating the illegal drug trade.
