Thompson man faces charges after crash linked to drugs

A Thompson man has been charged with reckless driving following a crash that resulted in serious injuries to a passenger. The incident occurred on May 26, 2024, and involved Wes McRoy, 21, who reportedly consumed alcohol and marijuana before the accident. According to a warrant, witnesses observed McRoy performing donuts in his vehicle prior to the crash.

McRoy surrendered to police on Friday and now faces multiple charges including first-degree reckless endangerment, failure to maintain lane, operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and drugs, as well as second-degree assault with a motor vehicle. Following the collision, McRoy sustained serious injuries and required hospitalization.

The passenger, a woman from Putnam, suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a medical facility after emergency responders extracted her from the wreckage. Investigators discovered two beer cans in McRoy’s Camaro, one of which was unopened and still contained liquid. The vehicle was seized as evidence.

After the crash, authorities interviewed the passenger at a Massachusetts hospital. She informed investigators that prior to the accident, she and McRoy had attended a pool party where she witnessed him consume a shot of vodka and smoke marijuana dabs. The victim indicated that she experienced life-altering injuries and recalled that the last memory she had before the crash was entering McRoy’s car. She also mentioned his history of reckless driving, stating, “I have previously been in Wes’ car while he was driving recklessly in the past. I have told Wes in the past that his driving scares me and I did not feel comfortable with it in the passenger seat.”

Blood and urine samples taken from McRoy after he was hospitalized showed presumptive positives for amphetamine and marijuana. Initially, he was held on a $100,000 bond and was arraigned in Danielson Superior Court. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 8, as recorded online.
