A recent study by Green Unicorn Farms has identified Louisiana as the best state in the United States for cultivating cannabis. The analysis evaluated nine critical factors affecting marijuana growth, such as climate, land costs, air quality, and CO2 levels, assigning each state a score out of 100 based on its suitability for cannabis cultivation.
Louisiana achieved a score of 64.81, making it the top-ranking state. The state excels in several areas: it ranks fifth in legality, has 248 frost-free days, and maintains temperature consistency that benefits plant growth. Additionally, Louisiana receives the highest annual rainfall in the country at 60.7 inches, which supports optimal growth conditions for cannabis plants.
Connecticut follows closely in second place with a score of 60.89. It offers affordable land, ranking fifth for land costs, and has the second-lowest CO2 emissions per 100,000 km², contributing to a favorable environment for cultivation.
West Virginia takes third place with a score of 60.58, leading the nation in air quality and also ranking among the top states for affordable land.
New Jersey and Alabama round out the top five, scoring 59.71 and 58.68, respectively. Alabama benefits from its warm climate and substantial rainfall, although it remains just above the bottom of the list.
In contrast, Nevada ranks as the least favorable state for cannabis cultivation, primarily due to its arid climate and environmental challenges. Robert Hising, Co-Founder of Green Unicorn Farms, emphasized the importance of optimal growing conditions, stating that freezing temperatures and legal barriers can hinder production levels. Farmers must understand these factors to succeed in the industry.
The findings from this study highlight the varying environments across the United States and how they affect cannabis cultivation, providing valuable information for growers and industry stakeholders.
