South Australian Driver Caught with Large Cannabis Stash in Holden Commodore

A South Australian driver is facing serious legal trouble after being caught with a significant amount of cannabis in a Holden Commodore sedan. The incident occurred around 1:30 AM on March 22, when South Australian Police noticed the Commodore driving on the Princes Highway in Meningie with its boot wide open. This unusual sight prompted the police to pull the vehicle over for further investigation.

Upon stopping, one of the occupants exited the car and attempted to close the boot. However, when they reopened it, police discovered “a large quantity of cannabis” that was only partly concealed by a bed sheet. The boot, which has a capacity of 496 liters, could not accommodate all the marijuana along with a full-size spare wheel, leading to both occupants being charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of a controlled drug.

In South Australia, a commercial quantity of cannabis is defined as 1 kilogram or more of pure marijuana, or 2.5 kilograms of mixed cannabis. Trafficking such amounts can result in severe penalties, including fines up to $200,000 and potentially 25 years in prison. In addition to the cannabis, police also seized multiple pairs of secateurs from the vehicle. The two men are scheduled to appear in court on June 2.

Interestingly, the Elizabeth factory in northern Adelaide, where the Commodore and other Holden vehicles were produced, was once slated to cultivate medicinal cannabis after production ceased in 2017. However, it is now repurposed as a mushroom farm.
