Hong Kong Customs has made a significant drug bust at Hong Kong International Airport, seizing around 10 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds. The estimated value of the seized cannabis is approximately HK$2.2 million. This incident took place on March 22, when a 47-year-old male passenger arrived from Bangkok, Thailand. Customs officers found the cannabis hidden inside his check-in suitcase, which led to his immediate arrest.
An investigation into the matter is currently underway. Customs officials have committed to increasing their enforcement efforts against drug trafficking. They plan to use intelligence analysis to improve their operations and have urged the public to stay alert and avoid engaging in drug trafficking for financial incentives. Additionally, they warned individuals against accepting offers to transport controlled substances for others.
To tackle transnational drug trafficking effectively, Customs will employ a risk assessment strategy that focuses on passengers coming from high-risk areas during the clearance process. Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offense, punishable by fines of up to $5 million and life imprisonment upon conviction.
