These tags include the name of the state-licensed grower, their license number, and a unique ID for each plant. This system allows regulators to track cannabis effectively and verify its source.
The environment has changed dramatically since marijuana legalization. Prichard recalls a time when he had to be secretive about his work, making it difficult to seek advice or assistance. Now, he can openly communicate with state regulators to ensure compliance and safety.
Zarha Ruiz, who leads environmental compliance and manufacturing safety at the California Department of Cannabis Control, emphasizes that their approach is still evolving. She states, “We like to say around here that we’re building the plane as we fly it.” This highlights the ongoing challenges in regulating an industry that lacks comprehensive federal guidelines.
Without the oversight of the federal Food and Drug Administration, states are left to establish their own safety measures. Gillian Schauer, executive director of the Cannabis Regulators Association, explains that states are working to create their own regulatory frameworks similar to the FDA and EPA.
