Georgia Lawmakers Debate Regulation of THC Products

Georgia lawmakers are urgently working on a bill to either regulate or ban the sale of products containing THC, the psychoactive component found in marijuana. This discussion comes as the market for THC products has grown unexpectedly over the past few years, following changes in federal law that made it easier to cultivate and sell hemp, a close relative of marijuana.

Hemp Haven, located in Avondale Estates, is one business that has embraced this trend by offering drinks fortified with THC. According to the store’s owner, Diana Padron, many customers view THC as a healthier alternative to alcohol. She explained that it is “a more natural alternative product that’s safer for their health, that’s not going to kill their liver or their kidneys.”

However, some lawmakers in Georgia express concerns about the potential for THC to impair users. The Georgia Senate has already passed a bill aimed at banning THC-infused beverages. Senator Bill Cowsert (R-Athens), who sponsors the bill, stated, “Let’s find the level that’s not intoxicating,” highlighting the need for a balance in THC levels in hemp-derived drinks.

The legislative process has been dynamic, with lawmakers frequently revising the proposed laws. At one point, the Senate even approved a complete ban on THC products. Recently, a House committee made changes to ensure that THC drinks remain legal and that their sales could be expanded to liquor stores.

Padron has voiced her concerns about the potential impact of these regulations on her business and others in the industry. She noted that state agents have recently visited her store, removing products that they deemed had THC content that was too high. “It gets very expensive when they’re changing the laws and they’re not thinking about the business owners,” Padron remarked, emphasizing her frustration with the situation.

Padron hopes that lawmakers can clarify the confusing state and federal laws without jeopardizing the emerging cannabis industry and her business. The legislature is scheduled to adjourn for the year this Friday, adding urgency to the ongoing discussions.
