SF’s 420 Hippie Hill Celebration Canceled Again, Alternatives for Safe Celebrations

The annual 420 celebration at Hippie Hill in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park has been officially canceled for the second consecutive year. Both event organizers and city officials cited a lack of resources as the reason for this decision. For decades, cannabis enthusiasts from the Bay Area and beyond have gathered on April 20 to celebrate cannabis culture in this iconic location.

Despite the cancellation, it is expected that many people will still flock to the park to commemorate 420, reflecting the grassroots origins of the holiday. In California, it has been legal for adults aged 21 and older to purchase and use marijuana since 2016, although there are specific regulations regarding public consumption. Those planning to celebrate the occasion are encouraged to read up on how to do so safely and legally.

Historically, the 420 gathering at Hippie Hill was an informal event before cannabis was legalized in California. Prior to 2016, cannabis lovers would meet at the hill to light up together at 4:20 p.m., creating a significant cloud of smoke. The term “420” itself originated from five high school students in San Rafael in the 1970s, who used it as a code for smoking marijuana.

However, as the event grew in popularity, it faced challenges, including reports of violence and littering. In response, organizers sought official permits after the legalization measure was passed. By 2017, the celebration had transformed into a well-organized event with security, portable restrooms, and medical services.

Unfortunately, the same economic challenges that led to last year’s cancellation are affecting the 2025 event as well. Daniel Montes, the communications manager for the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, noted that the struggling cannabis industry and city budget cuts prevented organizers from securing sponsorships necessary for the festival. Additionally, budget cuts have impacted the department’s ability to provide staffing for the event.

Even with the official festivities canceled, it is anticipated that individuals will still gather at Hippie Hill to mark the occasion, as seen in the previous year when hundreds participated despite the lack of an organized event.
