Massachusetts reports $4.87 million in cannabis sales on 4/20

Massachusetts recreational cannabis sales reached $4.87 million on April 20, a notable decrease of 54.3% compared to the previous year’s record of $8.5 million on the same day. The data, provided by the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission, reveals that the three-day sales period around 4/20 generated a total of $14.62 million, reflecting a 23.2% decline from last year’s three-day total of $18.45 million.

This year’s 4/20 coincided with Easter Sunday, contrasting with last year’s date, which fell on a Saturday. Bruce Stebbins, acting chair of the Cannabis Control Commission, acknowledged the importance of the 4/20 holiday for cannabis businesses, stating that despite the decline, the three-day sales period set a new record for the Patriots’ Day weekend.

In terms of product sales, cannabis flower led the market, generating $5.81 million, which accounted for approximately 39.7% of total sales during the three-day period. Vape products followed with $2.82 million in sales, while pre-rolled joints contributed $2.1 million.

Over the first quarter of 2025, Massachusetts recorded around $393 million in adult-use cannabis sales, similar to the same period in 2024. Notably, Worcester County topped the sales charts with $3.6 million, while Middlesex County followed with $3.2 million.

The 4/20 holiday, rooted in 1970s counterculture, has evolved into a commercial opportunity for cannabis retailers, who offer special promotions to attract customers. As legalization spreads across the United States, the day has transitioned into a significant marketing event for cannabis businesses, demonstrating the ongoing evolution of the cannabis industry in Massachusetts.
