Norfolk Woman Faces Prison for Smuggling Cannabis at Heathrow

A 46-year-old woman from Norfolk, Keira Borrett, has been remanded in custody after attempting to smuggle cannabis into the UK through Heathrow Airport. Borrett was apprehended on May 25 at Terminal 4 while returning from Thailand, where cannabis is legal. Customs officers discovered multiple cases filled with herbal cannabis during their inspection.

Borrett, who resides on Lowestoft Road in Gorleston, appeared at Willesden Magistrates’ Court, where she pleaded guilty to charges related to the illegal importation of a Class B drug. Given the serious nature of her offense and the risk of her absconding, magistrates decided to keep her in custody pending sentencing.

The court has requested a pre-sentence report to explore all options, including the possibility of an immediate prison term. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 16.

This incident is part of a broader trend, as authorities have recently increased vigilance against drug smuggling, especially from countries like Thailand. In the previous year alone, 430 suspects were arrested at Heathrow Airport, and authorities seized a total of 14,617 kilograms of cannabis. These figures highlight ongoing challenges for law enforcement in managing drug trafficking at one of the world’s busiest airports.
