Island Peži, a cannabis dispensary operated by the Prairie Island Indian Community (PIIC) in Minnesota, celebrates its first anniversary on June 22, 2025. The dispensary has been a pioneer in Minnesota’s adult-use cannabis market, which legalized recreational cannabis in 2023. To commemorate this milestone, Island Peži will host a block party from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring local vendors, food trucks, and entertainment.
The anniversary event will include raffles, prizes, and pop-up booths from businesses such as North Star Canna, Slay Beverages, and Ganja Skoden. Guests will receive a complimentary pre-roll with any purchase while supplies last. A traveling photo booth will be available, and a local DJ will provide music throughout the afternoon.
Since its opening, Island Peži has established a 13-acre cannabis cultivation campus, which includes sun-grown and greenhouse operations, along with facilities for extraction, processing, and distribution. This venture is part of the tribe’s efforts to create sustainable economic opportunities for its members. As the state of Minnesota has not yet issued licenses to non-tribal cannabis businesses, Island Peži is currently one of the few dispensaries operating under tribal sovereignty.
Grant Johnson, president of the Prairie Island Tribal Council, emphasized the importance of the tribe’s cannabis investments. He stated, ‘Our cannabis investments have created a long-term revenue stream for our community and future generations of our tribal members.’ The tribe aims to practice responsible stewardship of its land and promote regenerative agricultural methods to support a sustainable ecosystem.
This anniversary celebration not only marks a year of successful operations for Island Peži but also highlights the potential for indigenous communities to thrive in the evolving cannabis industry.
