Illinois cannabis sales dip slightly in April

Illinois reported April sales figures for adult-use cannabis, revealing a minor sequential decline of 0.6%, totaling $146.6 million. On a per-day basis, however, sales increased by 3.8%. Year-over-year, sales grew by 1.4%, showing an improvement compared to the declines seen in February and March. Notably, the number of units sold rose by 9.0% from the previous year, indicating that consumers might be opting for lower-priced products or that prices are decreasing overall. Sequentially, units sold increased by 4.6%.

After experiencing notable growth in previous years—106% in 2021, 13% in 2022, and 5% in 2023—2024 has shown a year-to-date increase of 5.4%, bringing total adult-use sales to $1.72 billion. However, the current year, 2025, is seeing only a modest rise of 0.4% thus far.

In March, sales to non-residents accounted for 20.5% of the total. For the medical cannabis program, sales in April fell by 1.6% sequentially, amounting to $19.7 million and reflecting a 13.2% decrease year-over-year. Combined adult-use and medical cannabis sales in March reached $168.4 million, down 0.7% both from the previous month and compared to March of the previous year.

Total cannabis sales in 2024 reached $2.01 billion, marking a 2.5% increase from 2023. However, early 2025 figures indicate a 1.9% decline in sales compared to the first three months of 2024.
