Haverhill's Stem cannabis shop marks five years with events

Stem, Haverhill’s pioneering cannabis retailer, celebrated its fifth anniversary last week with a series of events at its location on Washington Street. The celebration included a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 30, attended by owner Caroline Pineau, state officials, and local community members. Pineau expressed gratitude to the customers and the community for their support over the years.

The ceremony featured remarks from Bruce Stebbins, acting chair of the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission, who acknowledged the challenges of operating a cannabis business and praised Stem for its commitment to community engagement. ‘This is a business that is not easy to get into or to sustain,’ Stebbins said. ‘Clearly Stem is giving back to the community.’

During the four-day celebration, attendees enjoyed various activities and had the opportunity to view a new mural created by Boston artist Hailey Bonia, which adds a fresh aesthetic to the store’s lobby. Pineau also provided tours of the unfinished upper floors, where the shop plans to expand its offerings.

Stem is currently developing its second and third floors into a state-of-the-art social consumption center, funded in part by a $500,000 Cannabis Social Equity Grant. This facility will include a smoothie and juice bar, educational programs, and golf simulators. Pineau mentioned that they are exploring the possibility of serving alcohol in separate areas, in compliance with state regulations.

To ensure accessibility, plans are underway to install an elevator and a new staircase at the rear of the building, adhering to the Americans with Disabilities Act. The couple is in the process of securing the necessary permits from the city for this expansion.

As Stem continues to grow, Pineau emphasized her pride in the business’s journey alongside the city of Haverhill, stating, ‘We’ve grown with this city and we are honored to be part of the downtown community. Here’s to an amazing five years and a future we’re building together.’
