Ohio increases nonmedical cannabis purchase limits to 2.5 ounces

Ohio’s marijuana dispensaries are set to increase the daily purchase limit for nonmedical cannabis patients starting this Thursday. The Ohio Division of Cannabis Control (DCC) has revised its guidelines, allowing recreational customers to buy up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower each day, which is more than double the previous limit of 1 ounce.

This change follows an assessment by the DCC of the state’s cannabis market, confirming that it can support both recreational and medical sales. The DCC emphasized that dispensaries must continue to prioritize access to cannabis products for medical marijuana patients. Legal regulations permit dispensaries to sell up to 2.5 ounces of flower or dried marijuana plant material per customer per day.

In addition to flower purchases, customers can also acquire a maximum of 15,000 milligrams of THC through various products, including vapes and edibles. However, purchasers cannot buy both the maximum amount of flower and the full THC limit in a single transaction, according to attorney J.R. Bernans.

While the DCC allows dispensaries to adjust their sales limits, it is not mandatory. Amplify, one of the dispensaries, announced its intention to raise its purchase limits. A.J. Caraballo, Retail Director at Amplify, stated, ‘To adjust their purchase limits, dispensaries must ensure a steady supply of cannabis for medical patients.’ He expressed confidence that Amplify can maintain a diverse range of products for medical users while accommodating the new daily limit for adult-use customers.

Dispensaries intending to update their sales limits must submit a change of operations request through the DCC’s online platform. This regulatory change marks a pivotal moment for Ohio’s cannabis market, facilitating greater access for recreational users while maintaining a focus on medical patient needs.
